Strawberries—One of the Best Things in a Garden

152502385_de57ab9991_mThe Huffington Post in their “Green” section has a piece on strawberries.
With the correct inputs, full sun, enough water in hot weather and a regular supply of nutrients, they are one of the best tasting and most productive plants to grow in a garden.
In the HP article there are the usual planting and cultivation tips. What I don’t understand is why the June bearing and the Everbearing that bear twice a year (in June and in the fall) are even still in existence.

Ever since day neutral varieties came out many years ago, the two other varieties should have withered into the compost pile. Day neutral varieties, here in Oregon, start in late May and produce berries until the first frost in the fall. There is no down time in the supply of berries and my mouth is watering right now just thinking about them. Only a little over two more months and I will have some to pick in my backyard. I grow Seascape, Hecker and Fern day neutral varieties. They all produce a lot of berries. Two red thumbs up. (That is what you get when you pick a lot of them.)

City and patio gardeners can grow them in containers, gardeners with enough space can grow them in raised beds. The vertical stacking containers can grow many plants with much more volume in harvests in a very small area.

I grow “Temptation” strawberries indoors and out in coco coir. It is a self-fertilizing everbearer. They are smaller, but their quantity and quality more than makes up for it.
