Prison Prawns—Inmates Try Raising Shrimp

PrisonprawnsIn the defunct print edition of The Growing Edge, I reported on numerous county, state and federal prisons that were raising hydroponic crops in the prisons, both to give the prisoners fresh produce in their usually bland meals and to teach the inmates a skill that they might be able to use once they get out of the big house.
This story is the first I have heard of inmates raising shrimp at a prison. Whole Foods Market will take as much as they can produce.
Tracy Harmon, in The Pueblo Chieftain, writes,

“Colorado Correctional Industries managers are hoping it doesn’t take a big product to yield big profits as the inmate work program delves into its newest venture of growing shrimp.
A test batch of 30,000 shrimp is in its third month of growth in a converted greenhouse at Arrowhead Correctional Center, a minimum-restricted security prison which also houses a tilapia fish operation and a floral greenhouse operation.”
