Of all of the elements that contribute to the growth and health of plants on earth, light is one of the most important and one of the most difficult to understand. What is light? We can’t touch it, we can’t put it in a bottle and store it for later use, and unless the rays or reflected rays are passing directly into the eye, we can’t even see it.

Without getting into the arcane discussion of the dual nature of light--as both particle and energy wave--even a practical grasp of the workings of this most important of plant foods is elusive for the typical grower. Sure, plants need light to grow, everyone knows that. But why do they need it? What do they do with it?
