Basic Backyard Breedingby Martin P. Waterman

The science of plant breeding conjures up images of scientists in white jackets working in laboratories on the latest in high-tech equipment. This perception is somewhat misleading since plant breeding can be in the domain of any gardener and the equipment needed can be surprisingly inexpensive.

Some plant breeders have even developed new plants in their homes or apartments without having the benefit of a garden, let alone a laboratory. Because there is a perception that plant breeding has to be a complex operation, many gardeners and growers are missing a facet of horticulture that can be highly rewarding.
