Artificial Lighting in Horticultureby Bill Lermer

My last article (see “Horizontal or Vertical Lighting,” The Growing Edge, Vol. 2, No. 2, Winter 1991) referred to specular lighting (reflecting at an exact angle, like a billiard ball) as being desirable because it can minimize multiple bouncing (causing heat losses) inside the reflector. A diffused reflective surface might be desirable only if multiple angles of reflection were more important for a particular application than total intensity. This might be the case for species not requiring high light intensities.

However, most production corps of vegetables and herbs prefer higher intensities.
