Building by Design: Hydroponics in Developing Countries, Part 2by Peggy Bradley and Cesár Hernán Marulanda Tabares

In the previous issue of The Growing Edge we explained a technology termed “simplified hydroponics,” a method of growing food that has been adapted for developing countries. The growing beds can be constructed from locally available materials--that can be acquired for low cost or free. The goal is to provide a means of sustainable food production for as little capital input as possible. In our simplified hydroponic projects around the world, the United Nations has sponsored development. However, anyone can develop a working simplified hydroponic setup with minimal investment.

We’ve already covered how to build the growing beds, the basics of nutrition, and potential crops. Now it’s time to take a close look at the possibilities we have for growing media and nutrient solutions.
