Success With Lettuce on May’s Wonder Gardens
The last year of the century held more closure for some people than others--and not just “millennialists.” For Donald Lau, 1999 signified a time of endings--as well as beginnings. After a few years of gradually becoming bored with his recent retirement, Lau returned to the daily excitement of the business world and began a hydroponic lettuce growing operation on the hills of Haleiwa, located on the scenic north shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
Lau had owned the Palama Meat Company for 50 years before retiring a few years ago. However, retirement didn’t sit well with his disposition. He wasn’t willing to simply idle through the remainder of his life. That was enough impetus for Lau and his wife Bernadette to start Mays Wonder Gardens.
Going from not having any practical knowledge about hydroponics one year to running a 10-acre operation a few years later may seem like quite a step. However, Lau is a seasoned businessman and hes done his research. And--most importantly--he has the dedication, excitement, and time.
