Growing Notes--A Beginner’s Guide to Hawaiian Hydroponics
Adapted from the instructional manual “Hydroponics In Hawaii Using Black Lava Rock: Eze Gro Kit”
Hydroponic gardening has a long list of attractive features: space, water, and soil conservation; pesticide-free growing; low maintenance; quick results . . . the list goes on and on. But there is one aspect of hydroponics that causes many people to cringe: cost.
Although the working costs of hydroponics compare to traditional gardening, setting up a system for the first time can be costly. But considering the educational potential of hydroponics, I thought that there had to be a better way. I searched every available source for a comprehensive lesson guide or teachers manual on elementary hydroponics construction and growing and came up dry.
Therefore, I dedicated myself to the task.
Merchants and researchers all proclaim to have the best methods and machines to cheaply grow hydroponic plants. But sometimes the best model is the one you create yourself. After reading about the “Eze Gro” system of hydroponics, beginners and educators might not think that they need to buy expensive gadgets in order to achieve success. And established growers can use the techniques of the Eze Gro system to spread the wisdom of hydroponics to new, fertile areas of the community.
