home_treejpgWith the interest in organic gardening comes an increased interest in compost, the simple magic of turning food waste and other materials like straw, paper, leaves, grass clippings, etc. into humus, one of the plant nutrients and soil enhancers of organic gardening. It is only natural then that a week is dedicated to compost and raising people’s awareness of it.
It is estimated that each person in the U.S. creates one to two tons of compostable waste each year. Much of that is deposited into landfills.
The International Compost Awareness Week (May 3rd through May 9th) hopes to raise the awareness of people throughout the world to start composting their food waste. Studies show that 9 out of 10 people who start composing are still doing it 10 years later.
These 10 facts about composting will help you get started.
