Farmers in India are Committing Suicide Over GMOs

Vandana Shiva became an anti-globalization activist 20 years ago. Ms. Shiva tells of peasant farmers in India being lured into using genetically modified cotton seeds by convincing claims about the “wonder” seeds. indiafarmerWhat they don’t realize is they will be beholden to the GMO seed company since they legally cannot save seeds each season as they have done for generations.
These poor, illiterate peasant farmers are given elaborate sales pitches by the GMO licensed Indian local seed companies. After buying the GMO seeds they then must buy their seed each season from the seed companies. Many farmers say the crops are not as disease resistant as they were told and they also weren’t told they must use irrigation. So they must invest more money and subsequently go heavily into debt. This video explains the farmers plight. Many are choosing suicide over the heavy debt they end up with after using GMO cotton seed. Warning: graphic video at the end (dead people.)
