Some gardeners have their garbage disposal company provide them with FREE compost bins (like if you are a customer of Corvallis’ Allied Waste), others buy compost bins from garden centers, while still others go for a do it yourself building project.
Even though I can’t cut a straight line with a saw (hand or power), this simple project looks like something I might be able to pull off.
This industrious gardener takes five standard wooden pallets and a few screws and constructs a great low cost compost bin. It may not look as fancy as those black plastic commercial compost bins but it gets ‘er done. The spaces between the wooden slats provide good air circulation which is crucial in making good quality compost. Turning the compost with a pitch fork or spade gets even more oxygen into the pile.
Without oxygen, the pile goes anaerobic and can produce toxic by products. Providing good air circulation and oxygen to the compost pile prevents this problem and is one of the most important things to do to make good quality compost.
