Disease Is Ticking “Time Bomb” For World’s Wheat Crop

StemRustThe world’s wheat crop is at risk for crop failure due to an emerging disease called Ug99 fungus or stem rust. The disease is ravaging the wheat crop in countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Yemen. Several agricultural universities in the U.S. are conducting research on the disease.
“It’s a time bomb,” said Jim Peterson, a professor of wheat breeding and genetics at Oregon State University in Corvallis. “It moves in the air, it can move in clothing on an airplane. We know it’s going to be here. It’s a matter of how long it’s going to take.”
