The Editor replies:
In order for Ruellia caroliniensis (wild Carolina petunia) seeds to germinate, they must first undergo cold stratification. Sow the seeds outdoors early enough to provide 8 to 12 weeks of moist, cold temperatures below 50 deg. F, or mix seed with sand, peat moss, or milled sphagnum peat in a plastic bag and store in a refrigerator for 8 to 12 weeks before sowing.
