Shriver said she will get help with the garden from state Food and Agriculture Secretary A.G. Kawamura, the California School Garden Network and the chef Alice Waters, who has been a vocal advocate for school and public edible gardens.
Shriver’s office is still working out details, but the 800-square-foot “demonstration garden” will be on the east side of the Capitol building and will be planted in May. It will replace an existing flower bed.
Previously, Shriver launched school garden week in 2006. Schools throughout the state participated in special garden activities and events to celebrate the success of school gardens and to raise awareness for programs, support systems and resources that are available to schools.
