The W. Atlee Burpee & Co. “drill sergeant, will conduct a “basic training event” called “Root Camp” on Friday and Saturday, May 8th and 9th at the company’s Fordhook Farm in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
Gardening newbies will learn how to successfully start their own money saving garden during the event using Burpee’s Money Garden concept. Workshops, lectuers, and seed sales during the event will assist gardeners in constructing their own ornamental and edible gardens at home.
Noted celebrity garden writers will give lectures for an additional $20 fee:
Graham Rice – Ultimate Plants for Small Garden:
May 8, 11:00 a.m. and May 9, 11:00 a.m.
Rosalind Creasy – Edible Theme Garden
May 8, 1:30 p.m. and May 9, 1:30 p.m.
Excuse me for bursting the “fun” bubble, but I think it is freakin’ weird to have a military theme to promote new gardeners with two f’d up wars going on, military interrogation and torture controversies hanging in the air and military people getting shot and killed still in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I think they could have come up with a less grotesque theme than this variation on the Victory Garden. The marketing people have their heads up their ass. Either that, or it is some out of work Bushie, trying to soften up America’s attitude towards the wars with this pr stunt.
Hopefully, some of the attendees will be inspired to take up the more peaceful pursuit of gardening rather than going to sign up with the military since they had so much fun at “root camp.”
