A friend just sent me a link to an article in Popular Mechanics-1939 about Tank Farming (Scroll down to page 144), or the old-fashioned version hydroponic gardening where they used wooden tanks coated inside with hot petroleum tar or asphalt paint. In this system, the water was circulated with the motor of an old malted milk mixer. Chicken wire lines the bottom of the tank and is then lined with excelsior and wicks are formed by punching down the excelsior. Then each unit is filled with rice hulls, chaff and pine or oak shavings. The magazine has some interesting illustrations and models. Check it out!
