David MacKinnon hadn’t eaten a steak in a dozen years. That changed when he became a locavore. He had to switch from eating tofu to moose meat. He killed his first moose last year and his stomach still hasn’t gotten used to it.
MacKinnon is part of the movement to eat only foods produced within 100 miles from where a person lives, nicknamed locavores. He didn’t want his vegetarian “meat” or tofu or his vegetables to be shipped hundred of miles to Whitehorse, Yukon so he switched to hunting for a moose, killing it and dressing it out for his dinner’s moose steaks. He still isn’t sure he will permanently be eating moose meat but for the time being it is fulfilling his locavore regiment.
He is looking forward to late spring when the farmer’s market will have locally produced vegetables again for the locavores to purchase.
MacKinnon enjoys the salmon he catches but is still unsure about the moose meat.
