Why Cycle Without Fish?

There are a few important reasons why you might want to cycle your aquaponics system without using fish. First, both you and your fish will likely experience much less stress because you will not be trying to keep anybody alive during the process. Sound gross? Well, when you think about it, human urine is actually an excellent source of ammonia just as the waste product from any animal would be. Human urine is just easier to capture. Here is the catch. In order to go from urea to ammonia, you should put it into a sealed bottle for a few weeks to “percolate”. Can you just urinate straight into the fish tank? Sure, but the problem is that since that urine will take a while to convert into ammonia you will have no way of telling just how much potential ammonia you have in there. The levels will read very low, and then all of a sudden one day they will explode. A final concern around “humonia” is that there may be bacteria or germs in your digestive system that could be harmful to the fish and / or the nitrifying bacteria. In general, the conversion to ammonia in that sealed container will destroy most of this. However, the “humonia” approach creates a more complex biological environment than pure, synthetic forms of ammonia and thus introduces some risk to the cycling process and the health of your system.

Pros – This is a free and readily available source of ammonia, buy prevacid without prescription.

Cons –There is the “yuck” factor, the fact that you have to store the urine until it converts to ammonia, and the possibility that harmful bacteria or germs from your digestive system are transmitted to your aquaponics system.

Other sources of ammonia

Then I was testing one of my fully established, rock solid tilapia systems with a group of people who had just taken a class from me and were learning about maintaining their system. Cons – Again, because other bacteria and chemical compounds are given off during the decay process, there is a chance that you will introduce something undesirable to your aquaponics system, not to mention the chance of attracting flies or other insects that want to assist in the decomposition. The other con is that you will have difficulty controlling how much ammonia gets into your system with this method.

Instructions for Fishless Cycling

Once you have identified your source of ammonia, you will be ready to start the cycling process. Just follow these simple instructions.

Add the ammonia to the tank a little at a time until you obtain a reading from your ammonia kit of ~5 ppm.

Record the amount of ammonia that this took, and then add that amount daily until nitrites appear. By appear, I mean a reading of ~ 0.5 ppm.

Once nitrites appear, cut back the daily dose of ammonia to half the original volume.

Once nitrates appear (5 – 10 ppm), and the nitrites have dropped to zero, you can add your fish.

Cycling with Fish - Conclusion

The hardest part of cycling without fish is acquiring a good, pure source of ammonia. After that, this is a relatively easy way to get your aquaponics system up and running. It will give you much more control over the process, it will avoid endangering your fish by exposing them to too much ammonia and nitrites, and you will likely find the entire process much less traumatic. I recommend you give it a try.

I used fish to cycle my first aquaponics system and I suspect this is how most people approach cycling. Fish probably won’t be a profit center - Here in Colorado we have a federal prison that produces most of the "local" tilapia sold in grocery stores. It’s pretty tough to compete with prison labor. The price that tilapia fillets earn barely covers the cost of feed. We found that some grocery stores were interested in perch and barramundi, but these fish are more difficult to raise (maybe not the perch) and grow relatively slowly. The bottom line with fish is that we were hoping to break even on the cost of feeding them and heating their water. In exchange, they would provide all of our plant food at no additional charge! Plus, they would add a very potent point of differentiation to our organic produce operation. Look into your local market prices for the fish you want to grow as part of your analysis.

You may not be able to "process" your fish - In order to fillet a fish in Colorado, and I believe most of the rest of the country, you need to pass through some serious regulatory hoops and have a specially designed and inspected facility. You can, however sell them live, or "mostly live", meaning whole and on ice. When we looked into this, it meant that we could only sell to Asian markets and/or directly to consumers and restaurants. Again, restaurants were the most excited but only if they could have the fish they wanted - tilapia wasn't all that enticing to them. Again, figure out what works in your market and what regulations you are going to have to face.

Start with a small setup and learn first – I can’t say this strongly enough. The riskiest thing you can do is go to a weekend workshop and think that you are ready to manage a large aquaponics operation. While aquaponics is not complex once you understand how it all works, you need to grow for a while before you become experienced at recognizing signs of trouble. I can now walk into my greenhouse and instantly know that something is wrong because the sounds and the smells aren’t normal. I can look at the fish and observe their eating habits and tell how healthy they are. I can look at the plants and tell if I have a pH, nutrient, or insect problem. A year and half ago, I had none of these skills. I shudder to think what would have happened had I started a large growing operation before honing these skills.

Know thyself - I ultimately decided not to pursue a commercial aquaponics operation because I finally came to the personal realization that, although I have tremendous respect for farmers, I am not a farmer by nature. I don't do well with routine and solitude. I was intimidated by the notion that I had to be on call 24 hours a day until our business got big enough to hire employees, and even then would still be on call 24 hours a day, really. I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to physical labor in a hot environment. Given my background, I'm vastly more comfortable with backyard systems and helping people successfully start aquaponics in their homes. I love to teach, write, and promote – I’m a big picture person, not a detail person. But that is just me. Do you have what it takes to be an aquaponic farmer. Most aquaponic home gardeners are using media based, flood and drain systems. A media based grow bed optimally has about 12” of either ½ - ¾” gravel (no limestone or granite!) or expanded clay (Hydroton). The reason for these extra deep beds is to enable a multi-layered environment that supports enough beneficial bacteria and composting red-worms to maintain a very stable bio-filter for your fish. It also gives you ultimate flexibility in what plant types you grow because you don’t ever have to think about the size of your root mass. Some gardeners are even growing subterranean plants, such as potatoes and carrots.
Most media-based grow systems use a timer to turn the pump in the fish tank on and off (some use a system based on a siphon but how those work will have to wait for another article). A typical timer cycle is 15 minutes on followed by 30 - 45 minutes off and then the cycle repeats. When the pump starts, water from the fish tank is pumped into the grow bed. The grow bed fills with water up to about 10” or so. Obviously, this provides plenty of water and nutrients for the plants. Hydroton or other media above this height are in the “dry zone” and stay dry all of the time. When the water reaches about 10”, any additional water immediately returns to the fish tank through an “overflow” mechanism. The returning water strikes the water surface in the fish tank; thereby creating turbulence which helps aerate the fish tank water. When the timer turns off, the pump stops and the rest of the water in the grow bed returns to the fish tank. This period of inactivity gives the roots a chance to dry out and “breath” the air – something they greatly appreciate. Then, when the timer triggers the pump again the cycle repeats.

I will be approaching this sequentially as if you were building your own system and needed to know what to do first, then second, etc. The next article will be about how to source a grow bed and fish tank, how to think about the ratio between the volume of these two pieces, what to consider in locating them, etc. We will then discuss plumbing and the water flow between the tank and the bed, followed by an entire article about fish.
