Wowie, look out large vegetable record holders of the world! To the untrained eye, the 90 pound winner of the first cabbage weigh-in at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer, Alaska (and yes, actually, she can see it from where she lives), looks like a big loser. The record for the fair is 106 pounds and rumor has it that the world record holder, someone on the other side of the Atlantic, is 126 pounds. So, a 90 pounder is not really a BIG cabbage.
Ah! To the trained observer, however, the arrival of a 90 pounder at the first weigh-in portends really big things for the SECOND weigh-in. This is the one that brings in the BIG cabbages. And rumor has it that the winner of this week’s weigh-in has three heads twice the size of his current winning entry.(Well, the winner doesn’t have three heads…ah, you know what I mean). Stay tuned. It was sunny as all get out today and there is another 6 days of growing. Unless they all split, an automatic disqualification, we may be getting lots of sauerkraut from Alaska along with 10% of our oil and all of Sarah Palin.
